Pennsylvania Scholars Association (PSA)
What is PSA and why should I join?
The Pennsylvania Scholars Association (PSA) is open to all students who meet the minimum academic requirements (see membership details). Students must reapply for membership every semester by presenting their report card for grade verification.
Students who sign up and qualify for PSA membership for four semesters during their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years (with at least one semester in Senior year) earn the title of “Seal Bearers.” Seal Bearers receive awards at graduation and are permitted to wear the gold PSA cord and emblem pin at Commencement. Students who qualify for all six semesters earn additional recognition as 100% members.
Freshmen may apply for PSA during their first semester at Reading Alan High School by proving membership in a junior scholars program from their previous school, typically verified by a diploma or certificate with an official seal. Freshmen are considered "honorary" members until they have received high school-level grades.
MEMBERSHIP:
Students must apply for membership at the beginning of each semester. Membership is determined by the grades earned in the preceding semester. For example, Spring 2021 membership is based on Fall 2020 grades. The minimum academic requirements for membership are as follows:
10 points from the following scale:
A = 3 PSA points*
B = 1 PSA point*
C = 0 PSA points
D or F in any course, even if not counted for PSA, disqualifies the student from membership
*1 extra point is awarded for an A or B in an AP or Honors-designated course, with a maximum of two extra points per semester.
-
Four (4) of the 10 points must come from List I courses.
-
Seven (7) of the 10 points (including the four List I points) must come from List I and II courses. All seven points may come from List I if desired.
-
The remaining three (3) points may come from any list.
-
Only five courses (or 25 credits) may be used to reach the 10-point total.
-
Please refer to the PSA Lists I, II, and III for approved courses.
